Rehab Cost in India: What Addiction Treatment Really Costs in 2026
If you are reading this, someone you love, or you yourself, probably needs help, and the first worry is almost always money. Rehab fees in India stretch from free government care to more than ₹5 lakh a month at private luxury facilities. That gap is huge, and the cheapest option is not always the safest one. This guide lays out honest price bands, city-wise differences, hidden charges, insurance rules and the questions that protect your money before you sign anything.
A licensed private rehabilitation centre in India usually charges ₹25,000 to ₹1,20,000 per month for residential addiction treatment. Medically supervised detox can add ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 per day for the first 5 to 14 days. Premium centres charge ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh+ per month, while government-supported de-addiction centres offer free or heavily subsidised care.

The price ladder
The Four Price Tiers of Rehab in India
Most rehab centres in India fall into one of four bands. Each step up the ladder buys more clinical staff time, more privacy and a smaller patient-to-counsellor ratio. Knowing which band fits the medical need, not just the budget, is the first smart decision a family makes.
Government & Aided Centres
₹0 – ₹10,000/month
Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs), District De-addiction Centres and psychiatry wards of government medical colleges.
Trade-off: waiting lists, shared dormitories, fewer therapy hours per patient.
Basic Nasha Mukti Kendra
₹12,000 – ₹30,000/month
Shared rooms, counsellor-led daily routine, yoga, 12-step meetings and a visiting doctor.
Trade-off: quality varies widely. Always verify registration and whether a psychiatrist actually visits.
Clinical Mid-Range Rehab
₹35,000 – ₹1,20,000/month
Psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and nursing staff on the team, structured cognitive behavioural therapy, family sessions and on-site detox.
Best balance of medical safety and cost for moderate to severe addiction.
Premium & Luxury Rehab
₹1,50,000 – ₹5,00,000+/month
Private rooms, daily one-to-one therapy, holistic therapy, executive privacy and hill or resort settings.
You pay for comfort and intensity. Clinical outcomes depend on the team, not the swimming pool.
These are indicative ranges based on fees publicly listed by centres across India in 2025–26 and quotes we routinely see from our partner network. Final fees depend on the assessment, room type and length of stay.
Rehab Cost by Type of Treatment
“Rehab” is not one product. A person may need a week of hospital detox, three months of residential care and a year of outpatient follow-up, and each stage is priced differently.
Use this table to understand which line items your quote should include.
Prices in INR · indicative 2026| Service | Typical cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Psychiatric assessment | ₹800 – ₹3,000 / visit | Diagnosis, withdrawal-risk check and a recommended level of care. Some centres waive the first screening. |
| Medical detox | ₹2,000 – ₹8,000 / day | Doctor-led withdrawal management for 5 to 14 days, vitals monitoring, IV fluids and medicines where needed. |
| 30-day residential programme | ₹30,000 – ₹1,50,000 | Stay, meals, daily counselling, group therapy and psychiatric reviews. |
| 90-day residential programme | ₹90,000 – ₹3,50,000 | The most commonly recommended length for alcohol and opioid dependence, with relapse-prevention work built in. |
| Dual diagnosis care | +20% – 40% | Extra psychiatric input when depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or psychosis co-exist with addiction. |
| Day programme | ₹15,000 – ₹45,000 / month | Several hours of therapy daily while the person sleeps at home. |
| Outpatient counselling | ₹1,000 – ₹3,000 / session | Weekly individual or group therapy, often after residential care. |
| Aftercare & sober living | ₹10,000 – ₹35,000 / month | Structured living, check-ins and peer support during the first fragile months. |
| Online therapy | ₹700 – ₹2,500 / session | Useful for early-stage use, follow-up care or families living abroad. |
Why do rehab centres bill monthly while hospitals bill daily? A hospital charges for a bed in an acute setting; a residential centre spreads staff, therapy and living costs across a structured month. That is why a short detox in a hospital can feel expensive per day, while a full month at a well-run centre can work out cheaper overall.
Why the Substance Changes the Bill
Two people in the same centre can pay very different amounts. The biggest driver is withdrawal risk: the more medically dangerous the withdrawal, the more doctor time, monitoring and medication the first weeks require.
Alcohol
Heavy daily drinkers can develop tremors, seizures or delirium tremens when they stop. Detox must be supervised, so the first week costs more, then fees settle to the standard monthly rate.
Heroin, Smack & Opioids
Opioid withdrawal is intensely painful, and many patients benefit from medication-assisted treatment with ongoing prescriptions and monitoring, which adds medicine and review costs.
Sleeping Pills & Benzodiazepines
Alprazolam, clonazepam and similar pills cannot be stopped abruptly. A slow taper over weeks usually means a longer stay, which raises the total even if the monthly rate stays the same.
Cocaine, Meth & Stimulants
Physical withdrawal is milder, but the crash can bring severe depression, paranoia or psychosis. Budget for psychiatric reviews and possibly dual diagnosis care.
Prescription & Multiple Drugs
Painkillers, cough syrups and mixing substances make treatment more complex. Polysubstance use often needs a fuller medical work-up and a longer plan.
Ganja, Charas & Cannabis
Medical risk during withdrawal is low, so much of the spend goes to therapy rather than medicines. Many people do well with a shorter stay or an intensive outpatient plan.
Rehab Cost Across Indian Cities
Location changes the price more than most families expect. Rent, staff salaries and demand push metro fees up, while centres on the outskirts or in Tier-2 cities can offer the same clinical model for less. Ranges below are typical monthly fees for clinical mid-range residential care.
Money-saving tip: a centre an hour or two outside your city can cost noticeably less for the same clinical model. Just keep it close enough that family members can attend family counselling sessions regularly, because family involvement is one of the things that makes treatment stick.
Where Your ₹60,000 a Month Actually Goes
Families often wonder why a month of rehab costs more than a month of rent and food. Here is an illustrative breakdown of a typical clinical mid-range fee, so you can judge whether a quote is fair and ask sharper questions.
- Stay & meals · ~₹21,000Room, nutritious food, housekeeping and 24-hour supervision.
- Clinical team · ~₹18,000Psychiatrist reviews, medical officer, nurses and the clinical psychologist.
- Therapy programme · ~₹9,000Individual sessions, group therapy, family work and relapse-prevention classes.
- Medicines & tests · ~₹6,000Liver and kidney tests, drug screens, vitamins and prescribed medication.
- Wellness activities · ~₹3,000Yoga, meditation, fitness and recreational therapy.
- Admin & safety · ~₹3,000Security, records, licences and emergency arrangements.
If a centre charges far below this level, ask which of these blocks is missing. Very often it is the clinical team, and that is exactly the part that keeps detox safe and relapse risk lower.
Charges That Often Aren’t in the Brochure
A quoted monthly fee rarely tells the whole story. These are the extras families most often discover after admission. None of them is wrong in itself; the problem is surprise.
Ask for an itemised, written fee sheet and a refund policy before the first payment.
Ask us for an itemised quote- Medicines billed separately. Some centres include basic medication; others add every tablet to a monthly pharmacy bill.
- Admission lab tests. Blood work, liver and kidney function, ECG and urine drug screens commonly cost ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 at intake.
- Extra psychiatrist visits. The package may include one review a week; additional consultations are charged per visit.
- Detox surcharge. The first 7 to 10 days may be billed at a higher “medical” rate before the standard monthly fee begins.
- Family programme fees. Family therapy days or workshops are sometimes priced separately.
- Pick-up and transport. Be careful with services that offer to “collect” a person against their will. The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 sets out legal admission procedures. Read our guides on voluntary admission and arriving while intoxicated.
- Deposits and early exit. Ask what is refunded if the person leaves after a week. See changing your mind before admission and switching centres mid-treatment.
- Personal expenses. Laundry, toiletries, phone calls, canteen items and outings add up over a 90-day stay.
When a Low Fee Is a Warning Sign
Price alone does not make a centre bad. But in India, unregistered “de-addiction centres” continue to operate, and the cheapest offer is sometimes cheap because it skips doctors, safety and basic dignity. In one case reported from Punjab, health officials sealed an illegal centre that charged inmates ₹15,000 a month while they allegedly faced beatings and lacked toilets and proper food (The Tribune).
Use this side-by-side checklist when you compare quotes.
🚩 Red flags
- No visible registration as a mental health establishment
- No named psychiatrist, only “counsellors” or ex-patients
- Family calls and visits restricted for weeks
- Promises of a “guaranteed” or “permanent” cure
- Cash only, no receipts or GST invoice
- Offers to forcibly pick up the person at night
- Overcrowded rooms and locked gates as “therapy”
✅ Green flags
- Registration certificate displayed and shared on request
- Psychiatrist, clinical psychologist and nurses named on the team
- Written, individual treatment plan after assessment
- Itemised fee sheet and clear refund policy
- Regular family updates and structured family sessions
- Medical backup or hospital tie-up for emergencies
- A discharge plan with aftercare and relapse prevention
Before deciding, visit the centre in person if you can, and do not hesitate to seek a second opinion on a rehab recommendation.
Does Health Insurance Cover Rehab in India?
On paper, the law is on the patient’s side. Section 21(4) of the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 requires every insurer to cover treatment of mental illness on the same basis as physical illness, and the insurance regulator IRDAI directed insurers to comply in August 2018. Courts have since reinforced that position, including the Delhi High Court.
In practice, many retail policies still list alcohol or drug-related treatment among exclusions, and long residential stays at rehab centres are often not reimbursed. Hospitalisation for withdrawal complications, or for a co-existing psychiatric illness, has a better chance of being covered.
How to check your policy in 15 minutes
- Open the policy wording and search for “alcohol”, “substance”, “drug abuse” and “mental illness”.
- Check whether in-patient psychiatric care is covered, and if any sub-limit applies.
- Ask the centre if it is linked to a network hospital for cashless detox.
- Keep every prescription, discharge summary and itemised bill for reimbursement.
- If an employer group policy exists, read it too; group covers are sometimes broader.
Paying privately? Ask whether the centre accepts monthly instalments instead of a lump sum for 90 days. Many do, but you have to ask.
Free and low-cost support
The government supports hundreds of Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts (IRCAs) under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, offering in-patient counselling and treatment at little or no cost (PIB).

A confidential first call
Tell us what is happening, at your own pace. Here is what to expect on the first call.
Clinical screening
A short assessment, in person or by video assessment, decides whether detox, residential care or outpatient therapy is right. It helps to prepare a substance-use history beforehand.
Two or three matched options
You receive itemised quotes from suitable partner centres, so you can compare like for like. If one is full, we look at alternatives; see what happens when no bed is available.
Visit, ask, decide
Tour the centre or join a virtual walkthrough. If the assessment points to hospital care first, we explain why; read about when hospital care is recommended and moving from hospital to rehab.
Smooth admission
Keep the documents needed for admission ready and know what happens in the first 24 hours. Weekend admissions and families living abroad are both possible.
Aftercare that protects the investment
Recovery continues after discharge. A personalised treatment plan with follow-up therapy is what keeps the money you spent working for you.
Is Rehab Worth the Money? Weigh It Against the Alternative
A rehab quote feels large because it arrives as one number. The cost of active addiction is spread thinly across years, so families rarely add it up: daily spending on the substance, missed work, damaged vehicles, legal trouble and, sooner or later, hospital bills for the liver, pancreas, heart or brain.
Long-term drinking, for example, steadily harms the liver; read how alcohol affects the liver and the wider long-term effects of alcohol. Research summarised by the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse describes addiction treatment as cost-effective and compares relapse to other chronic illnesses that need ongoing care (NIDA).
Relapse is not failure, but it does cost money, which is why relapse prevention deserves a place in every budget.
A 90-day clinical programme often costs less than a single year of continued use, and it can change the next five.
Rehab Cost FAQs
Straight answers to the questions families ask us most often about fees, payment and value.
Ask your own questionWhat is the average cost of rehab in India per month?
For a licensed private centre with a psychiatrist and psychologist on the team, most families pay between ₹35,000 and ₹1,20,000 a month. Basic nasha mukti kendras charge less, premium centres considerably more, and government-supported centres may be free.
How much does a 90-day rehab programme cost?
A 90-day stay at a clinical mid-range centre usually totals ₹90,000 to ₹3,50,000, plus any detox charges in the first week or two. Longer stays sometimes attract a lower monthly rate, so ask.
Is detox charged separately from rehab?
Often, yes. Medically supervised detox may be billed at ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 per day for 5 to 14 days, especially for alcohol, opioids and sleeping pills. Learn more about medical detoxification.
Are there free rehab centres in India?
Yes. The government supports Integrated Rehabilitation Centres for Addicts and district de-addiction centres, and government hospitals run psychiatry and de-addiction departments. Call the national helpline 14446 to find services near you.
Will my health insurance pay for rehab?
The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 requires parity between mental and physical illness, but many policies still exclude substance-related treatment. Read your policy wording, check exclusions and confirm in writing with the insurer before admission.
Why are some nasha mukti kendras so cheap?
Very low fees usually mean fewer qualified staff, crowded rooms or no medical cover during withdrawal. Some low-cost centres are genuinely good and charity-run, so judge by registration, staff and treatment plan rather than price alone.
Is luxury rehab more effective than standard rehab?
Not automatically. Outcomes depend on accurate assessment, qualified clinicians, therapy hours and aftercare. Luxury adds privacy and comfort, which some people genuinely need, but it is not a substitute for clinical quality.
Can I pay rehab fees in instalments?
Many private centres accept monthly payments instead of the full programme fee upfront. Ask for the payment schedule and refund policy in writing before admission.
How much does alcohol rehab cost compared with drug rehab?
Monthly rates are usually similar, but alcohol, opioid and benzodiazepine withdrawal often need costlier medical detox at the start. See our detailed guide on alcohol rehab cost.
Can someone admit themselves to rehab without family?
Yes, adults can seek voluntary admission. Read how self-admission works in India and starting treatment without family support.
